Beyond the parks and playgrounds
Our family guide to Kingston covers the local stuff β riverside parks, the market, Hampton Court. But sometimes you want a proper day out. The kind where kids are so exhausted they fall asleep in the car home.
Good news: two of the best family attractions in Surrey sit within 20 minutes of Kingston. Chessington World of Adventures combines a theme park, zoo, and aquarium. Hobbledown Adventure Farm near Epsom has the kind of outdoor playgrounds that make children lose their minds with joy.
Weβve visited both, read hundreds of parent reviews, and put together the honest guide we wish weβd had. Including the downsides β because knowing what to expect is how you have a good day rather than an expensive disappointing one.
Quick picks
The 3 best family days out
Chessington World of Adventures
Best for: Under-5s (theme park), mixed-age families, all-day outings
Chessington is the best UK theme park for young children β and thatβs not us being parochial because itβs nearby. The under-5 offering is genuinely unmatched. Julia Donaldson rides (Gruffalo River Ride, Room on the Broom), a CoComelon area, and Paw Patrol zones mean toddlers and pre-schoolers get their own properly themed experiences, not just scaled-down adult rides.
But the real strength is variety. Theme park rides, a zoo, and a SEA LIFE Centre all on one site means you can switch things up throughout the day. When the queue for Gruffalo gets long, go see the penguins. When little legs need a break from walking, sit down for Tomb Blaster β an interactive laser dark ride that works for all ages and keeps everyone entertained.
Zufari, a jeep safari through animal enclosures, is consistently praised across review sites as a highlight for everyone. Mixed-age families work well too β younger ones do the character rides while older kids (8+) hit Vampire and Croc Drop.
The honest downsides: Chessington has a 1.5/5 on Trustpilot from over 700 reviews β skewed by winter complaints, but recurring themes are real. Food is extortionate (basic meals Β£15-17 β bring a packed lunch). Rides break down frequently β check the app on the day. Off-season (October to March) is a gamble with poor communication about closures. Aggressive upselling from queue-jump passes to photo packages.
Our verdict: For families with children under 10, Chessington is the best theme park day out near Kingston. Book online, visit midweek if you can, bring your own food, and check ride availability before you travel.
Ages: 2+ (best for under-10s) | Duration: Full day | Cost: From ~Β£22 (toddler deals), ~Β£35+ standard online | Under-90cm: Free
15-20 minutes by car from Kingston. Paid car park. Book online direct at chessington.com or compare ticket packages on GetYourGuide. Staying overnight? See our guide: Visiting Chessington? Donβt Just Do the Theme Park.
Hobbledown Adventure Farm
Best for: Ages 2-8, mixed-weather days, toddlers
Hobbledownβs play castles are the main event, and theyβre spectacular β multi-level structures with different areas scaled for different ages, the kind of thing that makes children sprint ahead of you the moment theyβre through the gate. Surrey Liveβs headline β βI finally took my kid to Hobbledown and now understand why parents rave about itβ β sums up the experience accurately.
But itβs not just playgrounds. There are underground tunnels, a mining village, water play areas, and over 200 animals including lemurs, wallabies, otters, meerkats, alpacas, and Shetland ponies. The indoor play barn is 14,000 square feet with vertical trampolines and, crucially, a dedicated gated toddler area for under-3s. The Imaginarium combines sensory play with live animal encounters.
The honest downsides: Hobbledown scores 2.4/5 on Trustpilot from 40 reviews, heavily skewed by birthday party complaints. Price is the number-one complaint β at Β£18 peak for a child, it adds up for larger families (afternoon saver from 2:30pm helps). Food is overpriced (mac and cheese at Β£7.50 β bring a packed lunch). Toilets are far from outdoor play areas. Some animal enclosures can be empty without notice.
Our verdict: The best adventure farm within easy reach of Kingston. For children aged 2-8 itβs close to perfect. Indoor and outdoor play means weather barely matters. Go on a weekday, bring a picnic, expect to stay all day.
Ages: 1-12 (best for 2-8) | Duration: Full day | Cost: From Β£14 off-peak, Β£18 peak. Toddler tickets from Β£12.50. Under-2s free. | Parking: Free
About 20 minutes by car from Kingston via the A243. Food on site: Hobnosh Restaurant and Pizza Cottage.
Little Peeps Soft Play β Chessington
Best for: Rainy days, ages 0-8, backup plan
When the weather makes outdoor plans impossible, Little Peeps on Hook Road in Chessington is a solid fallback. Jungle-themed soft play across two floors, with a separate baby and toddler zone for under-2s and a bigger multi-level structure for older children. Upstairs adds duckpin bowling and gaming zones β enough variety to burn off a couple of hours of pent-up energy.
Open Monday to Saturday 9am-5pm, Sunday 10am-5pm. Cafe on-site with barista coffee (for the adults) and hot food. No booking required β just turn up.
Not a βday outβ in the same league as Chessington or Hobbledown, but for those mornings when rain is hammering down and you need children occupied and tired, it does the job.
Indoor: Yes | Parking: Free
Under 5 or over 8: Chessington β theme park rides for little ones, rollercoasters for bigger kids
Ages 2-8: Hobbledown β play castles, animals, indoor barn
Mixed weather: Hobbledown β indoor barn saves a rainy day

Our take: Both benefit enormously from midweek visits. Bring packed lunches to both.
Always book online β both venues are cheaper in advance
Bring packed lunches β food at both is overpriced. Single biggest money-saver
Go off-peak β term-time weekdays are cheaper, quieter, and more enjoyable

Arrive at opening β the first 90 minutes at any attraction are the quietest. Do the popular stuff first
Afternoons empty out β arriving after lunch can work, and Hobbledown offers an afternoon saver from 2:30pm
Spare clothes: Hobbledown has water play, Chessington has water rides
Snacks: For the car, for the queue, for the meltdown. Always snacks
The app: Download before you go β Chessingtonβs shows live queue times, Hobbledownβs handles bookings
Sun cream and rain jackets: This is England. Bring both.
Hobbledown morning + Surbiton afternoon: Drive back via Surbiton, grab lunch on Maple Road, let kids run around at a local playground
Chessington + Little Peeps: If the weather turns, Little Peeps is five minutes up the road
Weekend split: Chessington or Hobbledown on Saturday, a free park day (Bushy Park, Canbury Gardens) on Sunday to balance the budget

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, Chessington is particularly strong for under-5s with Julia Donaldson-themed rides, Paw Patrol and CoComelon attractions, plus a zoo and aquarium. It caters better to younger children than most UK theme parks.
Chessington World of Adventures is about 15-20 minutes by car from Kingston town centre, or reachable by train from Kingston via Chessington South station.
Hobbledown is an adventure farm with extensive outdoor playgrounds, animals, and activities designed for children. It works well for toddlers through to primary school age and children tend to be exhausted by the end of the day.
Depends on ages. Under 5 or over 8: Chessington. Ages 2-8: Hobbledown. Both are excellent at what they do.
You can, but you'll feel rushed. Most families find they could spend a full day. If time is limited, arrive for the 2:30pm afternoon saver and focus on the play castles and indoor barn.
Hobbledown handles rain better thanks to the 14,000 sq ft indoor play barn. For Chessington, rain significantly reduces the experience β many rides close in bad weather. Little Peeps soft play in Chessington is the pure rainy-day option.
