Students & NHS Staff
Kingston has been training minds since 1899 and caring for the borough since 1843. If you're studying at the university or working at the hospital, this town is yours. Here's everything you need to know.
Two Institutions That Built Kingston
A Polytechnic and a Hospital
Most London boroughs have either a university or a hospital at their heart. Kingston has both — and their histories run deeper than most people realise.
Kingston University
Founded 1899 as Kingston Technical Institute
1899
Kingston Technical Institute opens — chemistry, electrical wiring, construction, nursing. A practical institution for a practical town.
1930
Kingston School of Art separates, carving its own identity on Knights Park beside the Hogsmill River.
1970
Kingston Polytechnic formed — College of Technology merges with the College of Art. 34 major courses, 17 at degree level.
1992
Kingston University — the Further and Higher Education Act abolishes the polytechnic divide. One of 35 institutions to make the transition.
Today
16,000 students across four campuses. 44% from outside the UK, from more than 140 countries. The polytechnic roots remain — applied learning, real careers.
Kingston Hospital
Caring for the borough since 1843
1843
Workhouse infirmary — a grim start, but one shared by many of London's great hospitals.
1902
Kingston Infirmary — separates from the workhouse. Now recognisably medicine, not poor relief.
1948
Joins the NHS on day one — one of the founding institutions of the National Health Service.
2024
Kingston and Richmond NHS Foundation Trust — merges with Hounslow and Richmond, expanding across Southwest London.
Today
400+ beds, 2,750 staff on Galsworthy Road. 24-hour A&E, maternity, cancer treatment, children's services. 350 volunteers.
