Gail's Bakery
The reliable neighbourhood bakery that gets everything right. Exceptional sourdough, seasonal pastries, and brunch dishes made with the same care as the bread.
Why we love it
When you want quality without surprises. The sourdough alone is worth the visit.
Gail's needs little introduction — the London bakery mini-chain has built its reputation on doing the fundamentals exceptionally well. The Surbiton outpost, housed in a former Lloyds bank on Claremont Road, brings that same standard to the neighbourhood: handmade bread, seasonal pastries, and brunch dishes where quality is the point. The sourdough is the anchor — crusty, properly fermented, the kind of bread that makes you reassess supermarket loaves permanently. Pastries change with the seasons but the almond croissant is a constant worth seeking out. For brunch proper, the avocado salsa verde on seeded sourdough with spicy mixed seeds is fresh and substantial. Everything is made with the same care they bring to the bread. The space is bright with generous seating — a proper eat-in area rather than a couple of awkward stools. Free WiFi makes it laptop-friendly for remote workers. They open at 7am on weekdays, making it one of the earlier brunch options if you're an early riser. The Pantry section sells their jams, spreads, and coffee beans if you want to take the Gail's experience home. **Local's Tip:** Arrive early on weekends for the best pastry selection — the good stuff goes fast. Their surplus goes to local charities at the end of each day, which feels right.
