Carmella Patisserie
Persian patisserie perfection on Ewell Road. Celebration cakes that look like art, roulades that disappear too quickly, and baklava worth the detour.
Why we love it
Rated #1 bakery in Surbiton on TripAdvisor. The celebration cakes are showstoppers — proper Persian pastry craft meets British cake culture.
Carmella is the kind of place where the display cabinet stops you in your tracks. Each cake is a small production — glossy chocolate work, precise piping, colours that pop. This is Persian patisserie tradition filtered through suburban Surrey, and it works beautifully.
The celebration cakes are the main event. Order ahead for birthdays and anniversaries — these are statement pieces, not supermarket sponges. But walk-ins get rewarded too: the roulades are light and creamy, the baklava properly sticky-sweet, and the Persian pastries offer something different from the usual croissant circuit.
The shop is small and focused on takeaway rather than lingering, but the queue of regulars speaks volumes. The owner’s background in Persian pastry shows in every detail — this isn’t fusion, it’s the real thing adapted for British tastes.
Local’s Tip: Pre-order celebration cakes at least a week ahead for the full custom treatment. The pistachio roulade is exceptional.
