Surbiton Hockey Club
The second oldest hockey club in the world, founded in 1874, and currently England's most dominant. The women's team won 8 consecutive league titles (2014-2022) plus 2024, and the men's are 2024-25 defending champions. Despite that elite pedigree, the club actively welcomes beginners with free taster sessions and equipment loans.

Beginner Accessibility
The most striking thing about Surbiton Hockey Club is the gap between its elite status and its genuine openness. Two free taster sessions before committing, equipment loans for newcomers, and a Back 2 Hockey programme on Monday evenings for adult returners — this is a club that actively removes barriers to entry. The 2 free taster sessions let you try before you buy, with sticks and shin pads provided.
Community Outreach
Beyond the club itself, Surbiton runs the Sugden Road Sports Trust charity, delivering over 130 hours of free coaching to 1,600 children in local schools. The Flyerz programme offers free inclusive disability hockey. Olympic gold medallists including Hollie Pearne-Webb — who scored the winning shootout goal at Rio 2016 — have come through the club system.
The Address Question
The club’s address is technically Thames Ditton (KT7), which occasionally causes confusion. But “Surbiton” Hockey Club has carried that name since its founding in 1874, predating modern borough boundaries by a century. The Tea Hut at Sugden Road serves fresh barista coffees, bacon sandwiches, and burgers on match days — it’s worth arriving early. The club hosts the EHL Premier Division Finals on 2-3 May 2026.
