Kingston's market has been trading continuously since at least the early 1200s, when the town received its first royal charter — likely from King John. The Market Place itself sits on a medieval street plan dating to the late 12th century, considered one of the best-preserved in London.
The name "Clattern Bridge," just behind the market, comes from Clateryngbrugge — the medieval clatter of horse hooves heading to trade. That bridge, built around 1180, is the oldest surviving bridge in London and a scheduled ancient monument. The market it served is still here.
Today the market is operated by Between the Bridges and runs seven days a week with 18 permanent stalls. The compact, neatly arranged layout makes it easy to wander through — and the food stalls make it one of the best places for a cheap, flavourful lunch in Kingston.
