Why we love it

The best all-round central Kingston pub — a 145-seat Thames garden, genuine history (1862, Fricker's Eagle Brewery era), and a midweek prix fixe that makes it worth visiting outside the weekend crush.

The Ram is Kingston’s oldest surviving licensed premises, dating to 1862 and the Fricker’s Eagle Brewery era. It sits on the High Street with a 145-seat beer garden directly on the Thames, south of Kingston Bridge — one of the largest riverside drinking spots in central Kingston.

The midweek offering is where The Ram earns its keep. A prix fixe menu runs Monday to Thursday, 12–8pm: two courses for £18 or three for £22. CAMRA members get 10% off cask ales. That’s a genuine reason to visit on a Tuesday rather than fighting for a garden seat on Saturday.

Wednesdays bring a pub quiz. Fridays have live music. Saturdays see The Lick Kitchen set up for Caribbean BBQ — a different flavour from the standard pub menu. Dog-friendly throughout, which matters given how much time you’ll spend in that garden.

The honest truth: weekends get extremely busy and noisy, and at peak hours the atmosphere tips from lively to commercial. The food is reliable pub standard — solid, not spectacular. But for a central Kingston pub that works for multiple occasions and has that riverside garden, The Ram is hard to beat.

Local’s Tip: Midweek lunch is the sweet spot — the prix fixe deal, a quieter garden, and cask ales at a CAMRA discount.
