Koyal
2 AA Rosette Indian restaurant with a Michelin-starred chef. Contemporary cooking that's genuinely exceptional — not just a cut above, but a different league entirely.
Why we love it
The destination Indian restaurant. Chef Nand Kishor (ex-Trishna, Gymkhana) brings Michelin-level technique to Surbiton. Worth the trip from anywhere in London.
Koyal is what happens when serious talent lands in the suburbs. Head chef Nand Kishor earned a Michelin star at Trishna, led the opening of Gymkhana (which won National Restaurant of the Year), and launched the Bib Gourmand-winning Dastaan. Now he's in Surbiton, and food critics are calling this one of the best Indian restaurants in London. The cooking showcases unique Himalayan ingredients — Jakhiya (wild mustard) and Bhanjeera (perilla seeds) — alongside contemporary interpretations of regional dishes. The 2 AA Rosettes reflect genuine quality: spicing that builds rather than bulldozes, presentation that reveals thought and care. The room is spacious and modern, seating 130 with a private dining area. It's the kind of Indian restaurant you take people to when you want to change their mind about what Indian food can be — and leave them wondering why this isn't in central London. **Local's Tip:** Book ahead, especially weekends. The tasting plates are the way to explore the range. Around £60 per person, more with wine — but worth it.
